Ahmed Shehzad Questions Shadab Khan’s Selection After Pakistan’s Crushing Defeat

Pakistani cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has openly criticized vice-captain Shadab Khan following Pakistan’s heavy defeat against New Zealand in the first T20I. Shehzad questioned Shadab’s performance and even his inclusion in the squad, sparking controversy.
During a discussion on a private TV channel, Shehzad expressed disappointment over Shadab Khan’s contribution in the match. The vice-captain managed to score only 3 runs and failed to take any wickets in his two overs. Shehzad demanded answers regarding the criteria behind Shadab’s selection.
“You’re talking about Shadab; tell me, what performance has he put up? Who brought him into the team? Let this series pass, the PCB has a different plan, and Shadab has been included in the team for a specific purpose,” Shehzad remarked.
Adding to the heated debate, Shehzad addressed the rumors about Shadab Khan being groomed as the next captain, alleging that the authorities had sent a young New Zealand squad to “buy time.”
Pakistan faced a humiliating nine-wicket defeat against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval. After being asked to bat first, Pakistan’s batting lineup crumbled. Mohammad Haris and Hasan Nawaz both fell for ducks, while Irfan Khan managed just one run, leaving Pakistan at a disastrous 1/3 in 2.2 overs.
All-rounder Khushdil Shah top-scored with 32 runs, followed by captain Salman Agha with 18. Pakistan was bowled out for a paltry 91 runs in 18.4 overs — their fifth-lowest total in T20I history. New Zealand chased down the target effortlessly, losing just one wicket with 59 balls to spare.
This crushing defeat marked Pakistan’s worst in T20I cricket in terms of balls remaining, surpassing their previous record against Australia in 2018, where they lost with 55 balls to spare.
Shehzad’s comments have ignited discussions among cricket fans and experts, raising questions about team selection and future leadership. All eyes will be on Pakistan’s next performance as the series continues.
