Rising Prices Contradict Government’s Inflation Claims, Says Hamid Mir

Islamabad, March 4, 2025 – Despite government claims of reduced inflation, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Senior journalist Hamid Mir has raised concerns over the rising prices of essential goods, stating that inflation relief remains largely on paper while common citizens continue to struggle with high costs.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Mir pointed out that while the capital administration celebrates a drop in inflation, real prices of goods in markets have skyrocketed. He criticized the government for spending public funds on advertisements to highlight economic improvement while failing to control price hikes at the grassroots level.
“The media is pointing out the helplessness of the state against greedy shopkeepers, but top government officials are celebrating a drop in inflation through advertisements on the public exchequer,” he wrote.
His comments come at a time when economic reports suggest that inflation has decreased to 1.5%, a significant drop from 23.1% last year. However, opposition figures and economic analysts argue that market realities do not align with these official statistics, as citizens still struggle with rising food and utility prices.
A linked article from Dawn.com further highlights the ongoing issue of market instability, with vendors and traders justifying the price hikes due to increased transportation costs, supply chain disruptions, and currency fluctuations.
This contradiction between official figures and real-life inflation has sparked public debate, raising questions about whether the government’s economic policies are truly benefiting the people.
As inflation remains a key political issue, opposition leaders and economic experts are calling for greater accountability and transparency in how inflation rates are calculated and controlled.
