Rising Tensions Between Pakistan and India Take Toll on AJK Tourism Sector

Muzaffarabad, May 4 — The tourism industry in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is facing a significant setback amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, leading to a sharp decline in visitor numbers and economic activity in the region.
Local tour operators and hospitality businesses have reported cancellations and reduced bookings, attributing the slump to growing uncertainty and security concerns. “We had high hopes for the spring season, but recent political tensions have discouraged both domestic and international tourists,” said a hotel manager in Neelum Valley.
Experts note that AJK’s picturesque landscapes, including spots like Ratti Gali Lake and Pir Chinasi, have traditionally attracted thousands of tourists each year. However, the current geopolitical climate has made potential visitors wary.
The impact is not limited to tourism alone. Small businesses, transport providers, and local artisans who rely heavily on tourism revenue are also feeling the pressure. “This is our peak earning season, and the slowdown has hit us hard,” said a local handicraft seller in Muzaffarabad.
Authorities are urging the federal government to support the region’s tourism sector through promotional campaigns and security assurances to rebuild traveler confidence.
As the situation remains tense, stakeholders fear prolonged disruption could severely damage the local economy, which heavily depends on seasonal tourism.
