Sindh Minister Criticizes PTI Over Controversial Canal Projects

Karachi: Sindh’s Senior Provincial Minister, Sharjeel Memon, has voiced strong opposition to the PTI government for initiating canal projects on the Indus River without addressing Sindh’s reservations.

Speaking to the media, Memon alleged that the PTI government proceeded with projects such as the Jalalpur Canal, Chobara Branch Canal, and the Greater Thal Canal Phase II despite Sindh’s formal objections raised at various federal forums. According to Memon, these initiatives prioritize Punjab’s interests while neglecting the needs and rights of Sindh’s people.

He highlighted that the Sindh Assembly had unanimously passed resolutions opposing these projects, which he claimed were approved unilaterally. Memon further asserted that the continued development of these canals could worsen water shortages in Sindh, severely impacting agriculture and livelihoods.

The controversy has reignited debates over water distribution and inter-provincial equity in Pakistan. Critics argue that such projects could deepen existing disparities, leaving Sindh at a disadvantage.

In a separate development, Memon also announced a province-wide crackdown on heavy vehicles, mandating fitness certificates for all heavy traffic entering Sindh. Vehicle owners have been given a 30-day deadline to comply, as part of the government’s efforts to enhance road safety and ensure regulatory adherence.
